Washington — As Members of the European Parliament meet with their U.S. counterparts during the annual Transatlantic Week, the technology industry is calling on Congress to extend redress rights to Europeans. Both the House and Senate introduced the Judicial Redress Act this Spring, which would allow Europeans and citizens of other allies to request corrections of inaccuracies in data held by the U.S. government for law enforcement purposes or seek civil judicial recourse in the alternative.
The Computer & Communications Industry Association has praised the legislation and organized a joint letter of support to members of Congress on the issue last month. The following can be attributed to CCIA President & CEO Ed Black:
“U.S. government surveillance is bound to be raised during Transatlantic Week events. While Congress recently passed some long-overdue surveillance reforms, this extension of protections to the citizens of our allies can be a strong next step in rebuilding the public’s trust in the U.S. Government and, by extension, in the U.S. tech industry. It’s the right thing to do, as members of Congress recognized when they introduced this legislation. What better time to take further action than when their European counterparts are in town working on areas to cooperate?”
