Tech and Rights Groups urge European Commission to consult stakeholders on illegal content

Brussels – Today, ten organisations representing digital rights groups, startups, Internet and technology businesses are asking the European Commission to uphold its commitment to consult stakeholders before issuing recommendations on removing illegal content online.

Despite the European Commission’s commitment to continue its dialogue with stakeholders on online infringing content until at least May 2018, it is likely to issue a Recommendation this month without reference to any major incidents justifying such hurry. The Recommendation was initially expected to tackle online terrorism content, but has been expanded to cover all kinds of content including copyrighted content.

The following can be attributed to CCIA Senior Manager Maud Sacquet:

“We encourage the European Commission to engage in dialogue with stakeholders, as promised, before rushing to actions which could have unintended consequences for online rights and the tech sector in Europe.”
