But then again, Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes isn’t ‘any’ politician. For that reason the CCIA, together with Betagroup was delighted to host her on Friday 22nd February for our event ‘Starting Up the Recovery: Internet + Jobs + Growth’.

Senators Introduce Startup Act 2.0

Four Senators have introduced bipartisan legislation this week designed to improve the environment for startup businesses in the U.S.  The Startup Act 2.0 would create an entrepreneur’s visa for legal immigrants to remain in the US and start up a business as long as they hire a certain number of American workers.  The bill would also create a new STEM visa that would provide green cards for foreign students who earn graduate degrees from American universities in science, technology, engineering or math – rather than sending them home to compete against us.  In addition, this legislation would create tax incentives for investment in startup companies and a new tax credit for research and development by those companies.  Further the bill would accelerate the commercialization of taxpayer funded research.

Necessity The Mother of Invention
When it comes to innovation, people often think of a research lab as the setting for new inventions or perhaps more recently the college dorm room or garage. But a new study by scholars including noted technology innovation professor at MIT’s Sloan School of Management Eric von Hippel finds that most innovation is happening on kitchen tables and garage workbenches.

President Outlines Innovation Agenda in SOTU
In last night’s State of the Union address, President Obama urged Congress to put America’s future first by making the investments in innovation, education, and infrastructure that will allow America to “do big things” and maintain our place as the world’s leading economy.

We agree. The nation faces a decision whether to invest and grow or to simply grow stagnate. As the President said, “[r] evolutions in technology have transformed the way we live, work and do business.” We must take the steps necessary to evolve, compete, and win in this changing world – research, education, and infrastructure are the right place to start.
