Washington - Months after Internet users rose against copyright enforcement legislation that would have changed the Internet, more companies are voluntarily offering more assistance to reduce infringement. RapidShare presented its copyright enforcement measures during a panel discussion at the National Press Club Wednesday.
CCIA's Matt Schruers told those gathered that lost amid the debate over the SOPA/PIPA bills was the understanding of what Internet companies already do to reduce copyright infringement. He explained that under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act companies are not liable for content others post on their sites -- as long as they respond quickly to requests to take down copyrighted material in response to complaints.
"The conversation is never if online companies, it's how much more responsibility companies have," Schruers said. "That's what SOPA/PIPA was about -- adding ruinous responsibility that probably couldn't have been complied with."
