Jonathan Orszag
Senior Managing Director, Compass Lexecon
Jonathan Orszag is a Senior Managing Director and member of the Executive Committee of Compass Lexecon, LLC. As a consultant, Mr. Orszag has conducted economic and financial analysis on a wide range of complex issues in antitrust, regulatory, policy, and litigation matters for corporations and public-sector entities. These engagements have involved a wide array of mergers and other economic matters in various markets, such as the sports, media, telecommunications, financial services, and high-tech industries. He has testified before the United States Congress, U.S. and international courts, the European Court of First Instance, and U.S. and international regulatory authorities on competition and economic policy issues.
In 2004, Mr. Orszag was named by the Global Competition Review as the youngest member of “the world’s 40 brightest young antitrust lawyers and economists” in its “40 under 40” survey. In 2006, the Global Competition Review named Mr. Orszag as one of the world’s “Best Young Competition Economists.”
Prior to entering the private sector, Mr. Orszag served as the Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and Director of the Office of Policy and Strategic Planning. In this capacity, Mr. Orszag was the Secretary of Commerce’s chief policy adviser and was responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of policy initiatives, from telecommunications issues to international trade issues. Previously, Mr. Orszag served as an Economic Policy Advisor on President Clinton’s National Economic Council (“NEC”). In 1999, the Corporation for Enterprise Development awarded Mr. Orszag its leadership award for “forging innovative public policies to expand economic opportunity in America.”
Mr. Orszag is a Fellow at the University of Southern California’s Center for Communication Law & Policy and has served as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Southern California’s School of Policy, Planning, and Development. During the 2004 election, Mr. Orszag served as a weekly commentator on economics issues for The Wall Street Journal Online.
From September 2000 to January 2003, Mr. Orszag served on the California Workforce Investment Board to which he was appointed by Governor Gray Davis; the Workforce Investment Board is responsible for coordinating the state’s job training programs. From 2000 to 2003, Mr. Orszag also served on the California Governor’s Technology Advisory Group. Mr. Orszag serves on the Board of Directors of Ibrix, Inc. and The First Tee of Washington, DC, and is a member of the American Economic Association, American Finance Association, the Econometric Society, and the Pacific Council on International Policy.
Mr. Orszag received a M.Sc. from Oxford University, which he attended as a Marshall Scholar. He graduated summa cum laude in economics from Princeton University, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and was named a USA Today All-USA College Academic Team. He is also a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy.
Mr. Orszag and his wife (Rica) have two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (Fenway and Lincoln). Mr. Orszag is an avid golfer and a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan.
