House Judiciary Hearing Yesterday on the Internet Radio Fairness Act
Yesterday, the Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition and the Internet of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing entitled: "Music Licensing Part One: Legislation in the 112th Congress."  There was so much interest in this hearing that not everyone could get into the room (myself included), and the hearing went for more than two hours and had to be cut off while Congressmen still had unanswered questions.

How beautiful is the open Internet?
There are some purchasing decisions that are clearly motivated by vanity or aesthetic value: make-up, designer clothes, leather bags and pictures for example, or the type of bar, restaurant or shop you want to be seen in. In some cases, design and function go together as can be the case with a car. But one purchasing decision where design plays no role is what broadband package you buy (and i am not counting the accessories such as mobile phones).

Republicans Should Demonstrate Support for Legal Immigration

One of the most striking characteristics of President Obama’s victory last week over former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was the level of support the President won from minorities: about 73% of both the Hispanic vote and the Asian American vote.  This has led to calls from prominent Republicans to reexamine the party’s stances on immigration issues.  I believe that the first step should be a clear declaration of support for legal immigration and enactment of the high-skilled immigration bills currently in Congress.

CCIA Joins Grassroots Effort To Update ECPA
CCIA is proud to be involved in the new Vanishing Rights grassroots effort that has just been launched by a number of NGOs aimed at convincing Congress to update the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA). As I’ve written a number of times in the past in this blog, ECPA is a law from 1986 that dictates the circumstances in which the government may demand access to citizen’s email and other documents stored online from the service provider. In many cases the law provides access to the government using process far short of the probable cause warrant standard that applies in the offline world. CCIA has been working diligently to fix this oversight in the law, because it is good for business and because it is the right thing to do.

Social Media, Citizen Advocacy Panel At 'Reboot America"

CCIA Public Policy & Government Affairs Senior Director Dan O’Connor joined experts from Twitter and online democracy groups on a “Future of Social Media for Citizen Advocacy” panel discussion, part of Reboot America’s recent Washington conference.  Happening just days after the U.S. election and moderated by former Washington Post and Politico correspondent Kim Hart – now director of corporate communications at Neustar – the session had a decidedly political bent.

CCIA Hopes New Congress Sees Tech Issues As Nonpartisan

As new members of Congress head to Capitol Hill next year and key House committees handling tech issues change leaders, CCIA hopes the new chairs and lawmakers recognize tech is an “everybody” issue.
