Big Week For Online Privacy Initiatives

Yesterday was a big day for privacy as the White House released its white paper on consumer privacy, and simultaneously a group consisting of nearly all of the online advertising companies announced that they would begin work to recognize the Do-Not-Track header offered as a privacy feature by some web browsers.

We're happy to see the White House's final product, and that it portrays a strong belief in the power of self-regulation backed up by government enforcement. We are also glad to see industry step up to give a vivid demonstration of the potential for self-regulation.

Thoughts On Information Sharing As Congress Introduces Cybersecurity Bill

Last week, after much anticipation and delay, the bipartisan Senate cybersecurity legislation, S. 2105 – Cybersecurity Act of 2012, was unveiled.

Though it is laudable that Congress has begun in earnest to attend to the critical cybersecurity threats that face America, there has been little debate about the how information sharing and defense of critical infrastructure will occur in practical terms when, and if, cybersecurity legislation is finally adopted.

International Conference in The Hague: Towards Flexible Copyright?

On February 10, the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice organized an international conference on copyright in The Hague. The conference provided Dutch decision makers with a good opportunity to share their views of future copyright policy with fellow EU Member States, academics, representatives of the entertainment and Internet industries, and other stakeholders.

Lightsquared Announcement Disappoints CCIA, Wireless Users
The FCC has revoked Lightsquared's waiver to turn on its nationwide, satellite-based broadband network. The move comes after those trying to block the system lobbied against it, claiming it would interfere with GPS traffic.

CCIA and others hoping for more spectrum and more wireless broadband competition are disappointed with this setback.
Federal regulatory bureaucracy and entrenched private and government interests have perpetrated a "bait and switch" maneuver on private business investors who played by the rules. The FCC has essentially granted squatters' rights to users of GPS devices that were never engineered to respect the lawful property boundaries of their licensed frequencies within the spectrum -- simply because they were there first.

Let’s Get Smart About Online Outlaws

Friends of mine who are real movie buffs with an enviable home theater and other wonderful rooms throw an annual Oscars party complete with red carpet and guests dressed up as characters from the year’s hit flicks.  “Creative Hollywood” is the attire.  I’ve channeled June Carter Cash, Amelia, and Black Swan.  This year I’m going much lower and darker…as a pirate.   No…not of the Caribbean or of Penzance.  Of the Internet high seas.  Trying to convince my husband to go as Kim Dotcom of MegaUpload infamy is, ahem, a taller (and bigger) order.   He prefers Keith Richards, and looks like neither.   But I digress.

Keeping Governments from Controlling the Internet: Why Geneva Matters

Geneva is the epicenter of intergovernmental processes that have a key impact on the future of the Internet.  As the only ICT sector trade association in Geneva, CCIA Geneva is in a great position to help ensure that governments like China, Russia, South Africa, and India which use these processes to push for an Internet managed by governments aren’t successful.

Internet Freedom and Jackson-Vanik

One of the most prominent trade issues in 2012 centers on Congressional approval of permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) with Russia.  While extending PNTR to Russia would provide some economic benefits to both countries following Russia’s WTO entry, we believe that there is another aspect to this issue to be considered: that of Internet Freedom.

SOPA Activism Spreads To Protests Against ACTA

In the wake of successful, widespread Internet activism against SOPA and PIPA, some momentum has been driven to ACTA, which may be a new four-letter acronym to many people, but has been around for years.  ACTA negotiations began in 2006, with the U.S. as one of the first involved nations.  ACTA stands for the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, which mentions counterfeiting in its title, but conflates counterfeiting with piracy, as is often the trend in IP rhetoric and legislation.  ACTA is a multilateral treaty that would have consequences for the global Internet, and would impact law enforcement in individual nations.  ACTA embodies the historical trend of increased intellectual property enforcement of private rights, without a corresponding public benefit, or any expansion in limitations, exceptions, or defenses.  The ACTA process has been marked with secrecy and a lack of transparency; updated drafts have leaked through WikiLeaks at each stage.

CCIA 2011 Highlights
The year was marked with challenges to the open Internet starting with the shutdown of the Internet in Egypt, threats to competition in the mobile market and the introduction of legislation in Congress that would have done grave damage to the Internet. CCIA was an early and consistent voice challenging assaults to Internet freedom and the digital economy from online sales taxes to private rights of action against tech companies.
