Roberto Viola Begins New Assignment As Director-General

Brussels — Roberto Viola becomes the new Director-General of the European Commission’s Communications Networks, Content and Technology Directorate General (DG CNECT) on Tuesday. Viola has been the deputy and began his career as an engineer for the European Space Agency, having also been Director General of the Italian media and telecommunications regulator AGCOM.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association looks forward to working with Director-General Viola who will oversee technology strategy and regulation at a critical time as the European Union works out the details of the Digital Single Market.

The following can be attributed to CCIA Europe Vice President James Waterworth:

“At this critical juncture in Europe’s digital economy, it is reassuring to have someone at the helm with both the necessary understanding of technology and political experience to make the right choices and to create a thriving and open Digital Single Market.”

“All sectors rely on the Internet and online services from cars to newspapers to stock exchanges. Roberto’s experience will guide him through the upcoming work on platforms, telecoms and audio visual services. I am confident he will ensure that Europe remains a vibrant and innovative marketplace to which investment is attracted, benefiting both consumers and job creators.”
