Brussels, BELGIUM — Bulgarian MEP Mariya Gabriel has been officially nominated to take over the European Commissioner post responsible for society and the digital economy. The European Parliament will now need to approve her appointment and portfolio previously handled by European Commissioner Günther Oettinger, now responsible for EU budget issues.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association welcomes Gabriel’s nomination. The following can be attributed to CCIA Europe Vice President James Waterworth:

“We welcome the appointment of Ms. Gabriel and wish her much success in delivering a  thriving Digital Single Market.  As an MEP, we hope Ms. Gabriel will welcome the European Parliament and Council’s improvements to fix the current proposals.”

“We look forward to working with such a dynamic politician as Ms. Gabriel on promoting economic progress above protecting vested interests and seeking to protect the integrity of the digital single market from those who would fragment it.”
