Washington — Today, Republicans of the House Ways & Means Committee sent a letter to the White House expressing serious concerns regarding France’s and other EU countries’ proposals for a digital services tax. The letter encourages the Administration to “use all appropriate tools to address this issue” and treat the proposed tax as a barrier to trade.
The Computer & Communications Industry Association welcomes this letter and the call to action.
As CCIA has stated frequently in recent weeks, the French digital services tax is directly targeted at U.S. firms and serves as a ‘de facto’ tariff on leading Internet exporters. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative also recently highlighted the French tax, as well as a number of unilateral digital services tax proposals throughout the EU, as a key trade barrier in its 2019 National Trade Estimates Report.
