Washington – The New Democrat Coalition, representing more than 100 House Democrats, has announced support for federal privacy legislation introduced by Congresswoman Suzan DelBene, D-Wash. The bill would give consumers control over their personal information, empower the Federal Trade Commission with additional tools and resources to patrol online privacy practices, and ensure that individuals across the United States can expect consistent privacy protections from organizations that retain their data.
CCIA issued its “Privacy Principles: A New Framework for Protecting Data and Promoting Innovation” late last year, setting out principles for federal action that would ensure that data is handled responsibly and transparently, while also ensuring that individuals can benefit from innovation and new technologies.

“Strong baseline privacy protections are key to consumer trust across the internet and we appreciate members of Congress as they build support for enacting a federal privacy bill. As internet traffic and online commerce crosses state boundaries, consumers need the privacy protections that only federal legislation can provide. We ask Congress to continue working together across party lines to enact a federal consumer privacy law.”
